Coming soon!

Hello, friends. I hope you are all enjoying the summer. Did you know that Out in Harmony starts up again soon? Rehearsals start on September 9, which is only 15 days away! (Note that we’re starting the week *after* Labour Day, since it falls so early this year.) I hope you can all join us, including those of you we haven’t seen for a while.

This is a good time to mention Out in Harmony to any of your friends who might like to come out and try singing with us. New folks are welcome at any time, but it’s nice to get right in on the beginning of the new music. (Please also mention that rehearsals are held in a scent-free environment! We like for everyone to be able to breathe!)

For those who were around last season (or want to learn some music really quickly!) we’ll be brushing up some of the last concert’s music to perform at the Walk for Life on Sunday, September 21. Mark your calendars now! (We’ll be reviewing this music the last thing in the evening, during the first couple of rehearsals.)

For those who like to keep track of such things, the September job rotation is: Basses on clean up, Tenors on snacks, Altos on set up, and Sopranos off. (Though you can all feel free to bring snacks to the first rehearsal, as we’ll have a longer break in which to greet each other.)

I look forward to seeing you all on September 9!

Feel the Beat!

Out in Harmony’s got rhythm, and we’ll be Shakin’ our Groove Thing while exploring some Fascinating Rhythms at our upcoming concert, Feel The Beat, on Saturday June 14th. From heartbeats to footsteps, from tides to seasons, from circadian rhythms to the circles of the stars… rhythms permeate our lives. Come join us for our toe-tappingest concert ever, and join us as we boogie, handjive, sway, disco, clap, stomp, and sing our way through an amazing evening of music that celebrates rhythm.

In addition, we are thrilled to welcome a special guest, Dr. Timothy Van Cleave, who will be bringing his amazing percussion skills to add to our rhythmic exploration!

Venue is wheelchair accessible. The doors will open at 7pm, and tickets are available at the door, from Little Sister’s Book Emporium, or through choir members.
There will also be a 50/50 draw during the concert and a reception afterwards.

As always, keeping our concerts accessible in all ways is a priority for us, so our ticket prices remain only $15, or we also have $10 concession tickets available for anybody who needs it. Children 12 and under are admitted free.

We are always looking for volunteers, which will get you into the concert for free. If you would like to volunteer at the concert, please contact denise.garzon@gov.bc.ca by Tuesday June 3, 2014.

No rehearsal February 18

We’re going to be performing for the residents of a seniors’ home tonight, so there won’t be a regular rehearsal this week. We hope you’ll think about coming along next week – this is a great time to join us as we start learning music for June!

A concert not to be missed

What a glorious concert!  It was a packed house with standing room only and unforgettable performances.  The concert theme of AS SEEN ON TV was a blast for singers and audience members alike, with TV songs and jingles from the 50s through today.  Nostalgia and singing-along ran rampant throughout the performance, and unexpected commercial breaks added surprise and delight.  —And that isn’t even mentioning the unexpected marriage proposal (and acceptance!) that occurred on stage after one of the solo performances.  Many congratulations to our two newly engaged choir members!

And looking ahead…

IT’S ABOUT TIME is the theme for our next concert, Saturday January 25, 2014, and it will be at a new location!   (Central Presbyterian, our venue of many years, has exciting plans for a full-scale renovation coming up – wonderful in many ways, but it means our next few concerts will be held elsewhere).  We are very pleased to announce our new concert venue will be the Unitarian Church of Vancouver, which is at the corner of 49th Ave and Oak Street.  It has a bigger concert space so everyone will get a good seat, plus a parking lot and is conveniently on 2 bus lines for easy transportation access.  We are very excited, and we hope to see everyone there.  Mark your calendars now!

What an amazing concert, eh?

Thank you to everyone who came out for our January 2013 concert, Eh?, and made it such a success!

We’d like to especially mention thanks to Nicki our director, Dan our accompanist, Blanche our sound dude, Sandra & Galen and the other friendly folks at Central Presbyterian, Jonathan for help setting up the lights, the many volunteers who worked diligently before, during, and after to ensure the whole thing ran smoothly, and of course our audience!

We had a great time, and are looking forward to doing it again!

Our next concert will be Saturday June 15, 2013, also at Central Presbyterian at 7:30pm, so mark your calendars now.  It is sure to be a fun time, and we hope you’ll join us.

What a concert!

Out in Harmony‘s ‘Heroes & Villains‘ concert last night was fabulous!  Big kudos to all the wonderful folks who helped make it happen: Central Presbyterian Church for the venue, Len Christiansen & John for their hard work with the sound system, the Concert Planning Committee for arranging the myriad details necessary to putting on a show, the many generous donors who helped create the gift baskets which were raffled off during the concert, Ariel and the hard working volunteer team, the choir members themselves for all their hard work and dedication in learning and performing the music, the many astounding soloists who stepped up into the spotlight and touched our hearts and minds with their inspiring and beautiful performances, Nicki our director for her nurturing leadership, and of course our amazing and enthusiastic audience!

It was truly a full-spectrum experience, with a wonderful mixture of music that ran the gamut: choral pieces and solos, heart-wrenching prayers and campy romps, lighthearted fluff and thought-provoking ballads, some pieces familiar to almost everyone and some known by hardly any, beautiful, invigorating, and inspiring.  In the next few weeks we’ll hopefully be posting photos & comments from the concert, so check back here (and if you have photos or comments/reviews, let us know!)

The choir has only one more rehearsal/wrap-up-party before summer break, but stay tuned for news about summer time events such as PRIDE, picnics in the park, etc.   The fall season’s first rehearsal will be Tuesday September 4th, and we’ll start preparing for January’s Canadiana themed concert.
