New season approaching!

Did you know that Out in Harmony starts up again soon?  Rehearsals resume on September 6, which is only a few short weeks away!  Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings, 7:30 – 9:30 at St. Margaret’s Cedar Cottage Anglican Church, 1530 E 22nd Ave., Vancouver.  Rehearsals are wheelchair accessible and scent-free.  New folks are welcome at any time, but it’s nice to start in September and get right in on the beginning of the new music.  Our next concert will be on January 21, and it will include songs around the themes of belonging, inclusion,  and welcoming.

For those who were around last season (or want to learn some music really quickly!) we’ll be brushing up some of the last concert’s music to perform at the AIDS Walk on Sunday, September 25.  Mark your calendars now!  (We’ll be reviewing this music the last thing in the evening, during the first couple of rehearsals.)

Due to popular demand, this year we will be finishing rehearsals at 9:30 instead of 9:45.
We hope to see you soon!
For more information, see our FAQs or send us an email at outinharmony@gmail.com.

We’ve Got Your Number!

Out in Harmony’s Got Your Number, and we hope you’ll join us for a fantastic evening celebrating numbers, counting, mathematics, and the different ways we measure beauty and meaning. How do you measure the pleasure this concert will bring?

(And don’t forget, concert tickets make most excellent gifts!  Give an experience they will remember warmly for years to come)

Count down the days until you can join us for an evening of musical numbers all about numbers.  We’ll celebrate finding the One, raise up to the Power of Two, and count up all the way up to 1000 Beautiful Things and beyond.  You can count on having a great time with your number one favorite Gay Bi Trans Queer Lesbian and Friends adult community choir!

The first rehearsal after the summer break is September 8 – just after Labour Day, at 7:30 PM at St. Margaret’s near Kingsway at Knight. If you can, bring a labelled snack to share, bring your summer stories so we can all catch up at break, and bring a friend, because more is merrier. As always, our rehearsals are scent and hemp free. Comment below about the awesome stuff you did this summer!

It’s that time again!

Hi there, friends of Out in Harmony!  Can you believe that choir starts in two weeks?  We hope that you can join us this year, and that you’ll invite any of your friends that might like to check us out.  Our first rehearsal will be Tuesday, September 3, at 7:30.  We’re still rehearsing in the wonderful space at St. Margaret’s Cedar Cottage Anglican Church, 1530 E 22nd Ave., just off the corner of Kingsway and Knight.  Answers to frequently asked questions about the choir can be found here.

Before we get back to singing, we’re going to have some non-musical fun!  Next Tuesday, August 27, starting at 7:30, we’ll be at the church with board games.  Come and reconnect with choir folks after the summer!  Bring snacks, and friends who might be interested in meeting some of us before they jump into singing!
Our next major concert is on January 25, and is entitled “It’s About Time”.  The songs are all about, well, time – the passage of time, important moments, etc.  Chances are, there’ll be a familiar song you’re happy to see, and something new to catch your interest.
I hope you have a good couple of weeks, and I look forward to seeing your bright shining faces soon!

OiH – Fluevog Fundraising Frenzy

Come one, come all (or at least come the number of people who fit into the Granville Fluevog store – 837 Granville, between Robson and Smithe)!  John Fluevog is helping Out in Harmony fundraise!  For any merchandise purchased from the Granville Fluevog store on June 20, 2013 between 7 and 9 pm, John Fluevog will donate half the purchase price to Out in Harmony. For serious. HALF. We are calling it the “Out in Harmony Fluevog Fundraising Frenzy”.
OK, I know what you’re thinking.  ”Surely this is too good to be true.”  Well, no it’s not, and don’t call me Shirley. John Fluevog has a long history of being a philanthropist and community-minded guy, and Out in Harmony recognizes a great fundraising opportunity when we see one. Like right now.
Now you’re thinking, “Not only does he make brilliant footwear and accessories, but he also gives money to charity? How can John Fluevog be so stinkin’ awesome?”  Honestly, I just. Do. Not. Know.
It this event unbelievable?  Yes. It is amazing?  YES.  Est-ce que c’est incroyable? Mais bien sur, mes amis!  We don’t even care if you want to use French so terrible that it makes your grade 10 French teacher cry herself to sleep at night with a bottle of Dubonnet (coughMmeGauthiercough). Just show up to the Granville Fluevog store on June 20 between 7 and 9 pm and buy a pair of the coolest kicks that your eyes have ever seen and your feet have ever felt. You’ll be treating yourself AND helping out a good cause AT THE SAME TIME.
Aside from awesome footwear and accessories for purchase, there might also be some stealthy song singing from the choir, and little snacky and drinky things too. (Malheureusement, il n’y aura pas de Dubonnet, Mme. Gauthier.)
Trust me. It’s going to be fun. If I were you, I’d plan on sticking around for the whole “shoe-bang”…

A concert not to be missed

What a glorious concert!  It was a packed house with standing room only and unforgettable performances.  The concert theme of AS SEEN ON TV was a blast for singers and audience members alike, with TV songs and jingles from the 50s through today.  Nostalgia and singing-along ran rampant throughout the performance, and unexpected commercial breaks added surprise and delight.  —And that isn’t even mentioning the unexpected marriage proposal (and acceptance!) that occurred on stage after one of the solo performances.  Many congratulations to our two newly engaged choir members!

And looking ahead…

IT’S ABOUT TIME is the theme for our next concert, Saturday January 25, 2014, and it will be at a new location!   (Central Presbyterian, our venue of many years, has exciting plans for a full-scale renovation coming up – wonderful in many ways, but it means our next few concerts will be held elsewhere).  We are very pleased to announce our new concert venue will be the Unitarian Church of Vancouver, which is at the corner of 49th Ave and Oak Street.  It has a bigger concert space so everyone will get a good seat, plus a parking lot and is conveniently on 2 bus lines for easy transportation access.  We are very excited, and we hope to see everyone there.  Mark your calendars now!
