We Belong Together!

2016_we-belong-together_fb_timeline_cover

We all grew up in different places with different people, and moved to different places in different times in our lives. Regardless of where we came from, we all need to feel that we belong.  We need places where we feel safe, where we can relax and be ourselves, and know that we are seen and heard and wanted. For many of us in Out in Harmony, choir is one of those places. We bring our individual selves and voices, and create a caring community that expresses itself through music. We invite you to join us as we sing songs about belonging, whether it’s seeking or creating a place to belong, or longing for such a place we’ve left behind. We promise to create such places for each other, and be determined to stick together no matter what the future holds.  Come and be part of our wider choir family: we belong together.

As Seen On TV

Love it or hate it, we can’t deny that television has changed the world.  It educates us, entertains us, and bombards us with advertisements; It divides us, brings us together, and makes the most distant places seem nearby;  It shapes our view of the world, affects what we consider to be important issues, expands our horizons with new ideas, tells us what to think, and challenges us to think for ourselves .

Please join Out in Harmony as we sing favorite songs, jingles, and themes from television shows both old and new.  It will be a toe tapping walk down memory lane as we resurrect both childhood favorites and current hits, and you will leave singing songs you thought you had forgotten as you head home at the end of the night.  “As Seen On TV” will be held Saturday, June 15th at 7:30 pm at Central Presbyterian Church (1155 Thurlow Street -which is wheelchair accessible).  Tickts are $15 with $10 concession tickets also available.   You can get your tickets from choir members, at Little Sisters’ Emporium, or at the door.

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact denise.garzon@gov.bc.ca by June 3rd.

January 19th, 2013

Out in Harmony’s January 19th concert is called “Eh? ~ The Can Con-cert”.

Mark your calendars and plan to be at Central Presbyterian Church in Vancouver on the evening of January 19th, because  it’s going to be THE place to be!

Out in Harmony, your favorite local Gay, Bi, Trans, Queer, Lesbian, and Friends choir will be bringing you an evening of music composed and/or arranged by Canadian musicians and composers.  There will be a wide selection of styles and topics, and you won’t want to miss it.  General admission tickets are $15, and concession tickets are $10.  (Or if you are interested in volunteering and getting in for free, contact Denise our volunteer coordinator at denise.garzon@gov.bc.ca )

We look forward to seeing you all there, eh?

What a concert!

Out in Harmony‘s ‘Heroes & Villains‘ concert last night was fabulous!  Big kudos to all the wonderful folks who helped make it happen: Central Presbyterian Church for the venue, Len Christiansen & John for their hard work with the sound system, the Concert Planning Committee for arranging the myriad details necessary to putting on a show, the many generous donors who helped create the gift baskets which were raffled off during the concert, Ariel and the hard working volunteer team, the choir members themselves for all their hard work and dedication in learning and performing the music, the many astounding soloists who stepped up into the spotlight and touched our hearts and minds with their inspiring and beautiful performances, Nicki our director for her nurturing leadership, and of course our amazing and enthusiastic audience!

It was truly a full-spectrum experience, with a wonderful mixture of music that ran the gamut: choral pieces and solos, heart-wrenching prayers and campy romps, lighthearted fluff and thought-provoking ballads, some pieces familiar to almost everyone and some known by hardly any, beautiful, invigorating, and inspiring.  In the next few weeks we’ll hopefully be posting photos & comments from the concert, so check back here (and if you have photos or comments/reviews, let us know!)

The choir has only one more rehearsal/wrap-up-party before summer break, but stay tuned for news about summer time events such as PRIDE, picnics in the park, etc.   The fall season’s first rehearsal will be Tuesday September 4th, and we’ll start preparing for January’s Canadiana themed concert.

What We Want is…. Volunteers!

Out in Harmony needs a few non-singing volunteers for the concert on Jan 21st to come early and help with concert set-up ticket sales and so forth(For most volunteers, coming early means 5:30pm, with one or two a bit earlier than that).  Volunteers will receive our undying gratitude and have an opportunity to see the concert for free! If you are interested, please email the volunteer coordinator at sarahelps@live.com by Jan 12, letting her know you’re interested and if there are any restrictions on what you can or can’t do. Thanks, and we hope to see everyone there.

Out in Harmony Pride Booth

PRIDE weekend is coming up fast, and we need to once again have people
sign up to take a shift at the pride booth. (Sunday, July 31)

Ideally we like to see 2 people assigned to be at the booth at a time,
for 1-hour long shifts, so that nobody is left on their own nor has to
stick around for a long time when they’d rather be watching the parade
or exploring the festival. We need somebody present at the booth at
all times from set-up to take-down, so please, if you are going to be
in town, sign up to take a shift so we can make sure we are covered.
Being at PRIDE is great for our visibility and we usually get several
expressions of interest and a couple of new members each year out of
it, so please help us spread the word about how great it is to be part
of Out in Harmony.

What we need:

MORNING SHIFTS = 9-noon: Set up is usually 8:30 or 9. There are very
few people to hand out info to since the festival probably won’t open
until 11:30, but there are some fellow-venders wandering around.

DURING PARADE SHIFTS = Noon to 3pm: Traffic tends to be fairly light,
but picking up. It is nice to have several folks signed up for this
period so we can take turns watching both the parade and the booth.

MAIN FESTIVAL SHIFTS = 4-6pm: This is the busiest time for passing
out info about the choir. Take down will probably be 6:30.

To volunteer, reply to this post or contact the site (oihwebsite at gmail dot com) and we’ll put you in touch with Denise.
