Hooray for PRIDE season!
Out in Harmony will once again have a booth at the Vancouver Pride Festival at Sunset Beach on Sunday August 4th.
You’ll be able to find us at booth #17, which is near the end of the row of booths backing up against Beach street, at the end farthest from the main stage. We will have friendly choir folks there just waiting to say hello and wish you a merry-&-gay pride, tell you all about the choir and what we are up to, and offering the opportunity to just hang out with other choir friends and enjoy the Pride festival.
We look forward to seeing you there!
The PRIDE festival this year was very hot, very crowded, and very fun. Thanks to everyone who took part, whether by being in the parade, spectating, visiting or staffing the booths, or just hanging out and soaking up the festivities.
Though we as a choir are not rehearsing over the summer, several of our members & friends will be getting together on Sunday August 19th at the outdoor showing of Dirty Dancing in David Lam park (1300 blockof Pacivic Blvd in Yaletown). The movie starts at dusk (around 8:30pm), and a bunch of us will be staking out a good spot early and gathering around 6:30 for a picnic before hand. Come and join us for food, fun, and singing along with the movie. Everyone welcome!
I hope everyone has a joyous and exuberant PRIDE this year! Please be sure to visit our booth at the Sunset Beach Pride Festival on Sunday, August 5th. We’ll have friendly choir members there happy to talk to you, answer questions, and give you the inside scoop on what the choir is really like.
Please note there has been some question about our booth’s location this year as we have gotten shifted around a little, but the latest update, as of 5:30pm Saturday August 4th, is that we will be close to our usual location, backed up against Beach Avenue, about midway down the line of booths.
We look forward to seeing you there!
Out in Harmony‘s ‘Heroes & Villains‘ concert last night was fabulous! Big kudos to all the wonderful folks who helped make it happen: Central Presbyterian Church for the venue, Len Christiansen & John for their hard work with the sound system, the Concert Planning Committee for arranging the myriad details necessary to putting on a show, the many generous donors who helped create the gift baskets which were raffled off during the concert, Ariel and the hard working volunteer team, the choir members themselves for all their hard work and dedication in learning and performing the music, the many astounding soloists who stepped up into the spotlight and touched our hearts and minds with their inspiring and beautiful performances, Nicki our director for her nurturing leadership, and of course our amazing and enthusiastic audience!
It was truly a full-spectrum experience, with a wonderful mixture of music that ran the gamut: choral pieces and solos, heart-wrenching prayers and campy romps, lighthearted fluff and thought-provoking ballads, some pieces familiar to almost everyone and some known by hardly any, beautiful, invigorating, and inspiring. In the next few weeks we’ll hopefully be posting photos & comments from the concert, so check back here (and if you have photos or comments/reviews, let us know!)
The choir has only one more rehearsal/wrap-up-party before summer break, but stay tuned for news about summer time events such as PRIDE, picnics in the park, etc. The fall season’s first rehearsal will be Tuesday September 4th, and we’ll start preparing for January’s Canadiana themed concert.
It has been a busy summer already. A big thank you to everyone who came out to sing for the OutGames opening ceremonies on Monday July 25th, and also to all of those who staffed or stopped by the Out in Harmony booth at the Sunset Beach Pride Festival on Sunday July 31st. The weather was great, the crowd was colourful and energetic, and a great time was had by all.
Don’t forget that this week brings 2 more chances to hang out with your favorite choir peeps and sing your heart out as we take advantage of Vancouver’s wonderful Outdoor Movie screenings. Tonight (Monday August 8th), come to Robson Square, find us in the crowd, and sit with us as we sing along with Kermit, Fozzy, and the gang while watching The Muppet Movie. Friday (August 12th) there will be a group of us at Harbour Green Park singing along to Grease. (Estimated start time for both movies is 8:30pm, though we’ll be gathering earlier)
We hope you’ll join us.
PRIDE weekend is coming up fast, and we need to once again have people
sign up to take a shift at the pride booth. (Sunday, July 31)
Ideally we like to see 2 people assigned to be at the booth at a time,
for 1-hour long shifts, so that nobody is left on their own nor has to
stick around for a long time when they’d rather be watching the parade
or exploring the festival. We need somebody present at the booth at
all times from set-up to take-down, so please, if you are going to be
in town, sign up to take a shift so we can make sure we are covered.
Being at PRIDE is great for our visibility and we usually get several
expressions of interest and a couple of new members each year out of
it, so please help us spread the word about how great it is to be part
of Out in Harmony.
What we need:
MORNING SHIFTS = 9-noon: Set up is usually 8:30 or 9. There are very
few people to hand out info to since the festival probably won’t open
until 11:30, but there are some fellow-venders wandering around.
DURING PARADE SHIFTS = Noon to 3pm: Traffic tends to be fairly light,
but picking up. It is nice to have several folks signed up for this
period so we can take turns watching both the parade and the booth.
MAIN FESTIVAL SHIFTS = 4-6pm: This is the busiest time for passing
out info about the choir. Take down will probably be 6:30.
To volunteer, reply to this post or contact the site (oihwebsite at gmail dot com) and we’ll put you in touch with Denise.
The Outgames are being held during the last week of July in Vancouver this year, and Out in Harmony will be performing at the opening ceremonies! We are inviting all our friends to come join us as we form a mass choir to kick off this exciting event and show the world what a great choral city Vancouver is.
We will be performing O Canada as well as one other piece. We will be holding 2 rehearsals prior to the Opening Ceremonies, and everyone participating needs to come to at least one rehearsal (though preferably both).
Rehearsals: Tuesdays at 7:30pm at the Vancouver Film School – 198 W. Hastings - Tuesday July 12th and Tuesday July 19th. Everyone participating MUST attend at least one of these rehearsals.
Performance: Monday, July 25th at 6pm – Vancouver Art Gallery
Please pass this on to all your singing friends who may be interested, and email our director Nicki at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are planning on participating or if you have any questions.
This is going to be so fabulous! We look forward to seeing everyone and taking advantage of this wonderful opportunity to gather together, sing, and show the world how Vancouver is brimming over with both music and pride!
Out in Harmony will sing at the “Raise Your Pride” fundraiser this Sunday, April 10, to help raise funds for the Royal City Pride Society and the Hospitality Project.
The show is open to the public and admission is by donation, so any friends and supporters of the choir would be welcome to take this opportunity to see us perform while supporting a terrific cause.
